Blog #5 - Classical Parallels

In this letter, Abigail Adams states that she misses her husband John. She also talks that the desire for liberty and tranquility are like no other desires, and this is why John should keep on until accomplishing his goal. After this, she wrote on the letter about how no one has got liberty without fighting, and it is something meant to fight for. Finally, she encloses her letter by telling John that she waits to hear from him soon.

"The great axiety I feel for my Country, for you and for our family renders the day tedious, and the night unpleasant" (Adams 676). This quote is an example of appealing to emotion, because it lets the reader now how the writer feels, and by saying what Abigail wrote, she makes us feel how she felt during that days. Appealing to emotion is very important, because if not, the letter would have no spice, it would be just boring words that form paragraphs.
"Did ever any Kingdom or State regain their Liberty, when once it was invaded without Blood shed?" (Adams 676).
This is an example of a rhetorical question because it is a question written with no aspiration of being answered. Rhetorical questions are truly important for this letter and for any work because many times by asking a question meant not to be answered we can state in a more convincing manner, or in a more expressed manner what we meant to say. In this case Abigail wanted to say to John that Liberty cannot be obtained if no blood has been spilled in the ground.
